Life isn't easy...

Hello Journeyers,
Let's just get straight to the point. This is going to be a long soppy post. I'm not a very happy person lately, I've had the worst year of my life so far and things just don't seem to be getting better. I'm going to be honest, I'm not a very positive person to be around lately so if you are looking for laughs and sympathy, it would be best to not stop by me. I might not be able to give you that. I actually told Cedric last night that I'm more and more convinced that my father was my lucky charm and now that he's taken away my luck just went right with him.

Then I have people in my life that some days make me realize that life isn't always that bad. Like Claudine. I actually feel very sorry for her. You see we work together. So she's like my easy access vent system. The best part is she's also someone that doesn't deal with people looking for sympathy very well, and on days when I need the "Stop your crap and get your act together" speech, I go to her. She's honest like that, and at the same time nice about it. She doesn't wait for something to happen, she makes it happen. Like today, I'm having a off last few days, then she pops me this email...

"This morning, nearly five years after my husband’s passing, a beautiful couple and their three kids knocked on my front door.  The man smiled and said, “Your husband was my heart donor.  He saved my life.  Not a single day has gone by that I don’t pray for him and think of you.  Thank you!"

This is the opening paragraph right out of an email I received today from a reader named, Colleen.  She goes on to admit that she couldn’t see any positive sides of her husband’s death, until she was staring at them on her door step.  “It doesn’t necessarily make things easier, but it certainly changed the way I think.  I feel like a small piece of my broken heart has healed.”

And the truth is, it happens just like that.  Although Colleen’s experience is unique, and somewhat extreme, at some point life slaps all of us with a good reminder that shifts our perspective.  Personally, I have been slapped with several of these reminders over the years.   And today, I want to pass a few of them along to you...

1.  Everything that happens helps you grow, even if it’s hard to see right now. – Circumstances will direct you, correct you, and perfect you over time.  Sometimes these circumstances knock you down, hard.  There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong.  And you might feel like you will be stuck in this rut forever, but you won’t.  When you feel like quitting, remember that sometimes things have to go very wrong before they can be right.  Sometimes you have to go through the worst, to arrive at your best.  So hold on to hope.  The tiniest thread will twist into an unbreakable cord.  Let hope anchor you in the possibility that this is not the end of your story – that the change in the tides will eventually bring you to new shores.  ( from the “Adversity” chapter of our book)

2.  The way you feel about people and situations will change, and that’s OK. – Things will seem totally different to you at some point in the future, just as you feel different now than you did in the past.  So remember, just because you liked something at one point in time doesn’t mean you’ll always like it, or that you have to go on liking it at all points in the future as an unthinking act of loyalty to who you are as a person, based solely on who you once were as a person.  To be loyal to yourself is to allow yourself to grow and change, and challenge who you once were and what you once thought. The only thing you ever have to be for sure is unsure, and this means you’re growing, and not stagnant or shrinking.

3.  Those who complain the most, accomplish the least. – It’s always better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed.  It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it.  If you believe in something, keep trying.  Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.  Spending today complaining about yesterday won’t make tomorrow any brighter.  Take action instead.  And regardless of what happens in the long run, remember that true happiness begins to arrive only when you stop complaining about your problems and you start being grateful for all the problems you don’t have.  ( from the “Goals and Success” chapter of our book)

4.  You are not alone in feeling weird and alone. – I used to think I was the strangest person in the world, but then I thought about how there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels weird and flawed in the same ways I do.  I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too.  Well, I hope that if you are out there reading this, you now know that, yes, it is true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you.  I often feel and think and struggle much like you do.  I care about many of the things you care about, just in my own way.  And although some people do not understand us, we understand each other.  YOU are not weird and alone!

5.  The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts. – The mind is your battleground.  It's the place where the greatest conflict resides.  It’s where half of the things you thought were going to happen, never did happen.  But if you allow these thoughts to dwell in your mind, they will succeed in robbing you of peace, joy, and ultimately your life.  You will think yourself into a nervous breakdown, into depression, and into defeat.  You are what you think. You can’t change anything if you can’t change your thinking.  A beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset.  When you wake up, take a second to think about what a privilege it is to simply be alive and healthy.  Breathe onto the bathroom mirror, just to see how amazing your breath looks.  The moment you start acting like life is a blessing, I assure you it will start to feel like one.  ( from the “Happiness” chapter of our book)

And again, if you're struggling with any of these points, remember that you are not alone.  We are all in this together.  Many of us are right there with you, working hard to feel better, think more clearly, and keep our lives on track.

Practical Tips for Productive Living

She knows when I need what, and this made me realise that there's much worse things going on the world than my problems. But I'm dealing and coping with it day by day. Some days are better than others. Sometimes I need that push and help sometimes I don't. But for now, I will take it day by day and try and at least concentrate on the positive because let's face it, life isn't easy, but it's what you make of it and on the plus side...I'm alive and healthy....

Thank you to everyone that's been taking my crap and for not kicking me to the curb yet. I appreciate you guys more than you know!

Mauritius {Part 2}

Holy Cow! Is it only me or has this week been dragging?
It's ONLY Thursday! *yawn* I hope you guys enjoyed my Part 1 of our Holiday in Mauritius. And in case you have missed it, you can go find it HERE. But seriously now, even if you did see it, I know you want to see it again, so HERE it is.
After days of Christmas festivities, late nights and a memorable date night, Cedric and I were tugged away and halfway on our way to dreamland, when I could feel Cedric toss and turning. Now we have to wake up in a few hours and this woman needs her happy sleep or she turns into this ugly misserable blob of a thing to deal with. But the tossing continued. Eventually I fell asleep with it and as our alarm go off I hear. "I didn't sleep well" My mind responds with "no sh*t sherlock" but I kept that to myself. {que misserable blob}
Me: "I noticed you didn't sleep well boo boo, but why?" Ced: "We forgot to give Aimee and Sev my address and contact details to give to custome" Me: "Oh bleep! {me frantically texting Aimee praying that their roaming is working}"
As we arrive at the airport we wait....and wait some more. Tring tring. Ced: "Hello...yes this is him. Yes Aimee and Sev are coming to stay by me...bla bla bla"

And a few minutes later these two faces came walking out. Sighs of relief between Cedric and myself. So it ended with them being questioned and treated a bit like they have bombs strapped to them at customs till customs finally believed them and let them through. Note to self: ALWAYS remember to give ALL neccessary details to travelling partners. And that's the story of how Aimee and Sev were minutes away of being interogated by Mauritian Customs. But they arrived safely, they are through customs and now their / our holiday can begin!

With another Cyclone warning on it's way we made sure to take full advantage of the days that were filled with sunshine and warm weather. We spent our days lying by the pool and eating and drinking WAY too much! They arrived the Friday and we had beautiful weather.

The Saturday the boys joined some of Ced's friends for their annual boys get together. And murphys law. Aimee and I were stuck inside while watching the rain fall. But that didn't stop us from eating, catching up over some tea and snapping some gorgeous nature photos. After giving up with our cameras and their self timers while running up and down the terrace trying to get nice photos of us.

The next day it was crystal clear and sunny. Perfect! The guys were off to play some golf at Anahita and Aimee and myself took advantage of the yummy breakfast buffet and then hit the beach. Get our tans on you know! Whahahaha. Utter fail! We for one did NOT put suncream. And after a good hour and a half I would say we decided to hit the shade a bit. Shock and Horror as we looked at each other. We looked like bloody lobsters! So we decided to hide take a break from the sun and go watch the guys finish their game instead. With the sun eating us and cheering on our men we worked up quite and apetite and so we ended our day with a yummy lunch overlooking the ocean and drinking more wine.

Sev is a big fishing fan {FF?} hehe, and he and Cedric used every opportunity to do some fishing. I'm not such a big fan, well I can tolerate it. What I CAN'T cope with are the mozzies. Thousands of mozzies seeking my sweet South African blood! They were all over Aimee, Sev and myself. The more Peaceful Sleep and Tabard we would put on the more they will attack us. We seriously looked like weirdos doing some sort of monkey dance trying to get away from the blood suckers! So yes, that is why I only managed to go fishing once. But Sev did catch us a nice Kingfish which we cooked and ate that night for dinner!

And then all hell broke lose. Yes. The mean, moody and bitchy Johlet emerged. I don't know why but my moods do sometimes get the better of me and I want to apologise again to Aimee and Sev for having to put up with it! But in between the hissy fits and rainy weather we squeezed in a trip to Ile aux cerf. The most popular beach in Mauritius. With crystal clear water and a white sandy beach we spent the day floating in the shallow water, while staring at watching 2 ladies go topless accross from us. Not a pretty sight as I prefer mine to stay cozy and snuck hidden behind pretty colourful bikini tops. The guys sure didn't mind and Aimee and I had a good giggle while watching them "try" to do the whole subtle I'm looking at the "view" thing. FAIL! kwahahaha

Then on the night before entering 2014, the weather started turning on us once again. The wind picked up. But that did not dampen our party moods. We had a great dinner at Cedric's parents house which they generously offered to us for the night. We watched a spectacular display of fireworks from Le Touessrok. {I wanted to put up a video I took but I cannot sensor some of the words of amazement that pops up} Cedric's parents invited us to join them after midnight at Four Seasons and then we went to end the night at Anahita. The hotels were lit up in the prettiest colours! They sure know how to throw a New Years bash! I can tell you that!

I would say we looked pretty darn good for people who went to bed at 05:30! And no my eyes are not red because I'm tired. I actually got a eye infection the 30th! Itchy burny eyes while on holiday is horrible! Trust me. I had to go get S4 drops from the doc when I arrived back in SA and after already sitting with this for 10 days it finally started to get better. As we entered the new year so did the cyclone.

Cedric and I went for a drive just to go see how bad it was getting outside and this was the result. It wasn't THAT bad. But it was only warning 2. And I can only imagine how much worse it looks when it hits warning 4. Thank goodness the Cyclone hit Reunion Island {sorry for the people there} and this was only after affects of it. This still did not stop us from having a massive braai with friends the evening and making the most of our holiday.

Strange to think just 2 days later the weather was like this...perfectly clear. And murphys law that this was on the day we left. Murphy you suck! Big time! But still, even with all the ups and downs {that would be my moods and the weather} we had a great holiday.

My Top 10 Moments of 2013!

WOW have I missed you! To be honest with you, I have been a tad off my blogging game lately. For some reason I am completely demotivated. So if you have ANY tips on how to get me motivated again please leave 'em down below! :)
I was reading Jenna's Top Moments over at A Home Away From Home and she persuaded me to do my own Top Moments Post.

I will be sharing my Top 10 Moments of 2013 below in no alphabetical order!

1) 3 Year Anniversary - Yes, most of you must be thinking "why that as a highlight". Well it's easy. I love Cedric so much and for me to reach 3 Years in a relationship is quite a big deal. hehe. Because he has officially been my longest relationship. I will take that as a sign and keep him around for a while longer...or forever!

2) #JHBbloggermeetup - I came up with this bright idea to organise a Johannesburg Blogger Meet up. After lots of planning and hard work trying to get everything together while having a 8-5 work we did it! I loved organising it, and was extremely blessed to have so many amazing sponsors jump on board who spoiled each blogger and contributed to the very generous goody bags. I met so many lovely people this day and I know that some of them will be in my life forever. I love how blogging and social media have introduced me to so many wonderful people. We all came together at Vovo Telo Parkhurst where we spent most of the day getting to know each other better and just laughing the day away. These ladies are truly special!

3) New Camera - Yes another strange highlight, but I have been subtly throwing hints in Cedric's direction for us to get a decent camera. You know, to be taken serious as a blogger you need a fancy schmancy camera....haha. Well that may or may not have been one of my hints. And then after driving through the Rhino and Lion Park one Saturday and after Cedric took a few photos with our "mik en druk" he finally caved and off we went to Dion Wired to buy this little baby.....

4) Playing with Lion Cubs - I love animals, and I love them even more when they are still small! What's not to love about anything baby size? So you can all imagine my excitement when Cedric suggested we go play with the Lion Cubs at the Rhino and Lion Park. (this was actually the same day he decided we need a new camera, so thank you baby lions and boo boo of course) It costs only R30 for 5min / 10min (I honestly cannot remember now) and you get to choose between either cubs who are 2-3 months old or a bit older. This day we went to play with the bigger boys, they were 7 months and superrrrr cute! We actually enjoyed it so much that we took Landan back the next day so that he can experience it.

5) Sunsets next to the Crocodile River - As all of you know, in 2012 we started doing mid year holiday breaks. It's much needed, because as much as I love Johannesburg, the rush and insanity of this city can hit you harder than you think. This is the perfect way than to cut your year in half and enjoy a little break away from the crazy traffic and rushed lifestyle. We decided to go to the bush this time around and opted for a nice break in Marloth Park, Mpumalanga. We would spend most of our evenings watching the sunset overlooking the Crocodile river while sipping on a sundowner. If it wasn't for me not being alive I would have guessed that that was pretty close to how heaven felt. We truly have a mesmerizing beauty to our country and I am very happy to call this place my home.

6) Close encounters with some Ellies - On the same mid year break we ended our amazing holiday in Thornybush Game Reserve. For the people who are first timers to my blog, I have a slight obsession with Elephants. Only a small one. And on our one game drive I begged the ranger to please just find the elephants for us. And with a little tip from the others and 2 hours of driving in circles he decided to not wait for the Elephants to come to us but for us to go to them. I started getting a bit nervous when we started driving more off road and cutting down branches just to find out way. And then all of a sudden, we were in the middle of herd of say 30 elephants! Mindbogglingly amazing I tell you. These creatures are such beautiful majestic giants. The one walked past us close enough for me to just reach out without any effort and touch it. It took all of me not to do it. To show how close we were, the picture below was taken without me even touching the zoom button.

7) We bought Mo-Landy - Everyone must have noticed by now that Cedric and I have a big slight obsession with the bush and everything related to it. So it's only common sense for us to invest in a car that would take us to these places with ease. And that is exactly what we did. We bought the best/coolest/hippest you catch my drift car in the world. And it's orange! And it is very obvious that Cedric's love for Mo-Landy has grown much bigger than his love for me. No jokes. I think he loves this car more than me. We named it Mo-Landy. Why? Well when you look at it from the front, it almost seems like the car has a mustache (Mo). And it's a Landrover (Landy). And Mo also means "mine" in Kreole. So when I told Cedric this he loved the name. Mo-Landy. May we have safe travels all over Africa with you!

8) Elephant Sanctuary - Haha wow so I have 2 highlights that involve Ellies! This one was something else. I loved it! For my birthday Cedric took me to get real up close and personal with these magnificent animals. Early morning we were off to Harties to go "play" with Elephants. I was in such a daze the whole morning. It was all so perfect and I just fell in love with these animals all over again. Intelligent (I can bet they they are more intelligent than some of the people in this country), gentle (well as gentle as a wild animal can be), beautiful, interesting and the list goes on. I have such respect for them and I can just imagine how perfect my life will be if I can one day work with them.

9) Inspired by Oprah - This is probably one of the days that I won't easily forget. I received an email the Thursday from a PR agency telling me that they would like to give me a ticket to go watch the one and only Oprah Winfrey Inspire the c#*p out of people that Monday. I literally almost fell off my chair! Phoned my boss to ask for the day off and off Siyaam and I went the Monday to go get our lives changed. And man was I inspired. I choked back a few tears when she walked in from being overwhelmed and then choked back a few more while she spoke.

10) Island ending - We ended our year off by going to Cedric's family in Mauritius for Christmas and New Year. And I entered the New Year with my best friend and her husband. This holiday she experienced my horrible side (so so so sorry). And even though I had my moods we still had a wonderful holiday. Even with ups and downs comes good times. Memories that will last forever. What a way to end 2013 and welcome 2014!

I just want to say thank you so much to all the people that made 2013 a big success. We had our ups and downs but we definitely came out stronger and better. Boo boo, without you 2013 would have been a tough one, so thank you for sticking it out and still being there! My family and friends, I know I'm not always the easiest person to get along with but thank you for not giving up on me! I love you guys and will treasure each and every one of you forever!

Here's to 2014! We can only go up from here!

Gee Whiskers...Charlene

Happy Friday Journeyers!
We are ending November with a bang. This months Blog Interview is with the beautiful Charlene over at Gee Whiskers. She has a huge passion for anything beautiful, especially beauty products and a even bigger crush on purple! Yes that's right, purple. I think she will be happiest in a world filled with beautiful purple things. :) No I doubt she's that bad...hehe!
I love reading all her reviews and her Wishlists are something I would kill for! She also recently got engaged! Congratulations lady!!! May you and the FIANCE (I know you can't get enough of reading or saying that) build a lifetime of happy memories!

JS: Tell us more about Charlene and Gee Whiskers. And why the name Gee Whiskers?
GW: I am a warm hearted and easy going person. I love being around people I care about and prefer to keep a small group of friends who I care deeply about than have many casual friends. I love experiencing new things although I tend to be a creature of habit and it takes someone to pull me out of my routine sometimes. The name Gee Whiskers is something personal to me. It is an exclamation I use when I see things that shock me or grab my attention – in both a good and bad way. I use it quite a bit and when it came time to choosing a name for my blog I wanted it to be something personal as well as different. I know that it isn't quite in line with a beauty blog name, but at least those that know me understand the meaning.

JS: Well the name of your blog is what drew me to it the first time. :) You are a beauty product addict, what 3 products can you not go without?
GW: I am most definitely a beauty product addict however I tend to focus a lot more on my skin care than on beauty. My top 3 beauty products are however – Mascara, BB Cream and Blush.

JS: You do have the most amazing skin I must admit! I might just be a tad jealous of it! hehe. What would you say is the best thing about living in South Africa?
GW: I haven’t traveled overseas and therefore all the travels I have done have been in South Africa. This has given me a deep appreciation for the beauty of this country. I am especially blessed to live in Cape Town so I am surrounded by so many beautiful sights and places. So the best thing about living in South Africa is most definitely the beautiful places we are blessed to have.

JS: So, you find a magic lamp and the genie grants you 3 wishes. What are they?
GW: Gosh, these types of questions always cause a struggle between the “selfish” me and the me that wants to help others. I will answer this a little selfishly this time. First wish, complete financial freedom for me and my entire family. Financial worries are a reality for almost every single person I know. To be able to have complete financial freedom it allows you to do the things that make you happy and that fulfill you. I would work because I want to, not because I have to. My second wish, a house in the Constantia Nek or Kirstenbosch area with a HUGE garden so that I can have lots of dachshunds and other animals running around. My last wish and most important wish, for everyone I care about to be happy and content. It really upsets me when people I care about are upset or going through hard times.

JS: WOW those are 3 rather deep wishes. Lady with a heart of gold! That's what you are! What are the words you live by and why?
GW: I live by very simple words “You are blessed”. It gives me perspective about life and all that I have so that I don’t take what I have for granted. Often it is so easy to get caught up in things and you lose sight of all the wonderful things you have in life. Yes, things can be very bad and unfair at times. But there is always something to be grateful for – be it someone you are blessed to have in your life, a job, or a home you can go to each day.

JS: Who do you look up most to in your life?
GW: This is going to sound like a cliche, but it is most definitely my parents. They started their adult lives with almost nothing and worked so hard for what they have today. I admire and respect them both so very much. They have also given me such a wonderful life that I will always be incredibly grateful for.

JS: What has been your best holiday memory to date?
GW: My best holiday memory is definitely our family holiday to Cape Town in 1998. We were living in Kimberley at the time so the trip to Cape Town was completely mind blowing to me. I remember seeing a billboard at the Waterfront saying “Imagine living here” and I said out loud “I wish!!!”. 18 months later my Dad was offered a job and we moved to Cape Town. I still like to believe it was a wish of mine that came true.

JS: Please describe your best day of your life so far?
GW: That is so easy for me to answer because recently I was proposed to by my boyfriend of almost three years. Without going into all the details (because I would need numerous posts to cover each detail and the back story to each of them) the day was filled with us traveling around Cape Town to all my favourite places and places that were special to us. Heading to each place I was handed a card with a little saying on it to give me hints to where we were going next. Each card had little cut outs in it and eventually all the cards came together to reveal my favourite quote from my favourite novel (The Great Gatsby) “There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice. Say yes?” As I turned around he was on his one knee and asked me to marry him in Kirstenbosch Gardens. It truly was the most beautiful and special day of my life.

JS: Ahhh I just got teary eyed reading that! Where do you see yourself in 5 years. Life, career and blog wise.
GW: Another difficult question to answer – in life I just want to be happy and I know that will be with me travelling and just being with my future husband. Career, I definitely see myself being in a Management role and I am working hard to achieve it. My blog, I really don’t want my blog to change too much. I know blogs change as a person does, but I want to ensure that it remains real and relatable to my followers. I might start including some snaps from my holidays but it will try to keep it true to what it currently is.

JS: Please share 5 of your favourite memories with us in pictures.
GW: I’ll share 5 recent memories from left: (1) Day I got engaged (2) Taking my dogs for a walk with my family at Rhodes Memorial (3) Sister’s Day – my sister and I often have Sister’s Days together where the two of us spend time alone together. This often involves exploring Cape Town. (4) Weekends away with my Sister. The most recent one was to Franschhoek. She is the best sister! (5) My Birthday this year. It was such a beautiful day and I always love going to Du Toitskloof.

So yes it is safe to say that I cannot wait to meet her and she is the first person I will call up when I ever go to Cape Town again! *fingers crossed it's soon*

Mokaikai - Mabula Game Reserve

Hello Journeyers! It's Thursday and we are halfway through August already! And in exactly 52 days it's my BIRTHDAY!!! Yes I may be a bit too excited about it but you guys will be too if you know what I will be doing for my birthday!!! You will probably find out sooner than later because I cannot keep a surprise to myself. Darn it!!! But I'm going to try my best!
Back to what we got up to over our Women's Day Long weekend...2 of our friends and us decided that a weekend bush getaway would be the perfect way to spend our weekend. We stayed at Mokaikai which is in Mabula Game Reserve (we have stayed here before too) and we found them in February when Cedric's brother was in South Africa. We fell in love with the place! We will definitely be making it a regular weekend hot spot for us over the next few years.

We hit the road just past 3 on Thursday (thank you to my boss for letting us leave at 3), and arrived just past 6. The lovely Rebeccah who looks after you throughout the whole stay (she washes up after you and keeps your room nice and clean) helped us unpack all our groceries and settle in. We started a nice bonfire and kicked off the fire for our boerie rolls. Yummy!
Unfortunately the weather wasn't that great. Windy and a bit of rain the Thursday and Friday morning. But that did not stop us from relaxing! The Friday we started a bonfire around lunch time and that's where we were till 11pm that night. Next to the fire, enjoying each others company and a few drinks. Who doesn't enjoy some good company and some good bush TV?

The Saturday we organised a Game Drive for us and as all of you SHOULD know by know, my only request was to see Leopards and Elephants. *happy place* We saw the Elephants within 5km's from the house. How lucky are we! They are the most exquisite animals. So graceful and beautiful. I could really just sit and watch them ALL day! But not in a Zoo, that to me is just cruel! The one younger Elephant entertained us by lifting a big branch and moving it out of his way. Like I said. These animals are amazing!

We saw 3 out of the Big 5. No Leopards. But they are sneaky animals and I know if you spot them you are very fortunate!
After our wonderful Game Drive we started with the fire, once again and dinner. That night it got chilly quickly and the wind picked up again so we moved the party relaxation inside and played some Vancouveropoly. Yes you read right! And Cedric wiped the floor with all of us! I was in more debt in the game than in real life. Beginners luck! Has to be! hehe

Just in case you thought that I was lying.

And as you can read from this post it was obvious that we were very morbid and unhappy people when the time came Sunday to pack up and leave. We hit horrible traffic and just knew that we were back in the hustle and bustle of the city life. Boo hoo! :(

And on that note I say... "Cheers to the almost freaking weekend! I'll drink to that" 

Tonight we have to pack because tomorrow we will be on a flight to Mossel Bay to spend some quality time with me dad and his lovey. And I will also see my bestie, Aimee and her husband, Sev! Cannot wait!
